VP Activities & Employability

Your VP Activities is responsible for ensuring your voice is heard on all issues relating to extracurricular activities, including sports, societies, volunteering and events.

Joel

My Name is Joel, I studied Visual Effects here at LSBU. My first involvement with the SU was in my first year when I put myself forward to take over running and hosting the weekly Quiz here on campus! This year I have been working with the opportunities team to make sure sports and societies are more.nclusive than ever, working with the Events Coordinator to ensure that the online events calendar was ever changing and evolving to student demand. I was limited in my role by the online working during the pandemic, but I am so excited to do the things I had put on hold this past year to make YOUR student experience outside of the classroom an immersive and engaging experience.

    What's the big idea?

Sport is essential for us all in our day-to-day life. It's healthy, makes you feel good and is proven to improve our mental health. The union currently provides plenty of sports team and memberships at reasonable rates. I know first-hand what it's like on the sports scene at LSBU, having served as President of the men's football team during my second year. I know our biggest problem is engagement. Why is it that in a student population of 18,000, the most subscribed to sports team only has 50 members?

    How will it benefit students?

I understand there are a lot of barriers to entry for our students. Including inconvenient times, career responsibilities and difficulties in travelling. I want to break down these barriers and make sports teams more.ccessible to our students. It is a great way to get out and meet some new friends, outside of your course or halls friends. I want to work with our Vice President of Activities and Employability to overcome these issues and increase university-wide uptake. We need to look into this and what is the most effective way of driving up engagement, whether this is through: - Providing more.ree sessions - Partnerships with various sponsors - Greater variety of sports available, e.g. volleyball

    Updates

I see lots of exciting work between the union and the academy of sport to provide a good base level of activities from September. I see lots of opportunities going forward to expand this following the initial rollout.
