Here’s my chat with Lilas Cave.

Why did you start this society?

I thought of creating the society during semester one when I realised that I will be spending my first year indoor. I wanted to socialise with people I have common interests with. I joined a few societies but didnt hear back from them so I created my own society advocating for environmental activism. I was also surprised that as a London university there were no society for this cause, so this was the perfect opportunity for me and also a productive way of speding my free-time.

How important is this society to you?

I am very happy to have had the opportunity to create this society, I am very motivated to lead our future projects and to create a sustainable structure so S.O.S Planet keeps going once my time at LSBU is over. I think that we reached a point where it is impossible to deny the Climate Crisis. Creating a society to raise awareness about it seemed critical, especially because students are our future leaders and I know that we can make a difference.

Who can join?

Only current students and alumni can join the society but our events and socials are always open for everyone to attend/follow.

What happens when a student joins?

When students or almuni purchase our membership, they will be invited to join our WhatsApp group which is where most of our activity happens, we also occasionally meet on MS Teams (at least during lockdown) to discuss our projects. We are not putting any pressure on members for them to engage, we created an environment where members join the society without having to jeopardise their studies. It is also perfectly acceptable to join just out of curiosity, without having any particular experience or free-time.
