Max

Hi everyone, my name's Max (he/him), I’m an Accounting and Finance graduate having spent my three years as a student getting fully involved with University life here at LSBU. I began my LSBU journey back in September 2018. I'd moved to London from North Wales and was excited for the journey that lay ahead. I never expected that I could be President of our Students’ Union three years later. I’ve had a truly life changing experience here at LSBU and hope to spend my year as President helping to pass on the transformational experience that I’ve had, to as many of our students as possible.

I've been here for three years, and I feel that I've seen both the good and the bad side of LSBU. I've been fully involved with university life and understand first-hand the problems we all face as students. The last academic year has been really tough for so many of us and I want to work with university teams and departments to improve the parts of our experience that are lacking. So that as we emerge from this pandemic, we can create a far greater university than it ever was before.

How I got involved in the SU

I've held several roles throughout my time at university and have a great flavour of what is already underway and what could make things even better.

My experience at LSBU includes the following:

  • Student Ambassador
  • Residential Life Ambassador (McLaren House)
  • Business Solution Centre, Student Advisor
  • Accounting and Finance Course Rep
  • President of the Men's Football Team
  • University Student Governor
  • Chair of Union Council

These roles have given me a far greater insight into student life at LSBU. I've worked with various teams across the campus. I know what we're doing right and what can be improved. I want to use my experience so far to push for a more.nclusive and more.iverse university, a university that gives us all a life-changing experience and a university that allows us to reach our full potential. I've had a life-changing experience during my three years here and want to show you that even though times are tough now, together, we can get through this and achieve more.

    Covid-19 Pandemic

    What's the big idea?

This has undoubtedly been the worst year to be a student. It's been incredibly tough for all of us; online teaching, a lack of face-to-face interaction and missing out on what it is like to be a student has had a massive impact on our experience. I believe we get more.rom university's day-to-day life experiences than we do from just studying. Whatever your subject is, everything you do around your studies makes a massive impact on the person you have become by graduation day. We've lost so much this year, and I want to make sure where possible we make up for what we've missed.

    How will it benefit students?

The pandemic has presented no end of new problems for us all, but the least we expect is that our university helps to provide solutions to our problems. I think most of us understand that a lot of the events of the last year have been out of the university's hands, and we appreciate all they've done to help and support us so far. However, at times there have been failures. I think it's also important to recognise the opportunities that are arising from this pandemic. We are perhaps about to enter a boom of life and energy. Let's take this time when things are bad to make services that were already lacking better than before! As mentioned, my main three aims as we hopefully see an end to this pandemic will include: - Ensuring students don't miss out on 'that experience' - Graduation Ceremonies and other key university events. - Ensuring Mental Health Support is available and absolute.

    Updates

Currently, I'm involved in the vast planning for welcome week and freshers fair 2021. I'm pleased to share that the union team have been working for months to ensure that as much as possible, all LSBU students have the very best start to their academic year this September.

The university has confirmed that graduation ceremonies will take place, but we're still waiting on dates. In the meantime, current graduates can get involved with the festival of success programme.

Mental Health support is due to receive a university-wide overhaul with the implementation of the new LEAP software programme from October 2021.
